PSX Trading Hours, Sessions, and Market Mechanics
The Pakistan Stock Exchange operates Monday through Friday. Understanding the trading schedule and mechanics is essential for every investor.
Trading Schedule: - Pre-Open Session: 9:15 AM - 9:30 AM (orders can be placed but not executed) - Regular Trading: 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM (main trading session) - Closing Session: 3:30 PM - 4:00 PM (closing price determination) - Market Closed: Weekends (Sat-Sun) and Pakistani public holidays
All times are Pakistan Standard Time (PKT, UTC+5).
Circuit Breakers: PSX implements daily price limits to prevent extreme volatility: - Regular Stocks: +/- 7.5% from the previous day's close - Tier-1 Stocks: +/- 10% - Index Circuit: If KSE-100 moves +/- 5%, trading is halted for a cooling-off period When a stock hits its circuit limit, it is 'locked' at that price and no further trades can occur at better prices until the next session.
Order Types: - Market Order: Buy/sell at the best available price immediately - Limit Order: Buy/sell only at a specified price or better - Stop Loss: Automatically sell if the price drops to a specified level - Good-Till-Cancelled (GTC): Order stays active until you cancel it
Settlement: Trades settle on T+2 — meaning if you buy on Monday, shares and funds are settled by Wednesday. The CDC handles electronic share transfer.
On MunafaPlus: The market data shows real-time prices during market hours and end-of-day data after close. Every screener result includes a 'market_status' field (live, post_close, pre_open, weekend) so you always know if data is real-time.
